- I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them.
- —Deuteronomy 32, Verse 23, The Holy Bible: King James Version (2000)
Far Ranger is a continuation of a line of characters I've made that crosses game systems who have a remarkably similar appearance. I consider him a parallel version of another character I've made, but he is most distinctly his own person in spite of the similarities.
Personality
WIP
Powers
Far Ranger has no obvious special powers. However, he has demonstrated the ability to fire off a large volume of arrows in an astonishingly short period of time, which may be an indicator of a minor superhuman speed talent.
Weaknesses and Limitations
Without his equipment, Far Ranger isn't much of a match for the average superhuman. He's a trained PRIMUS agent, but he's still only human.
Equipment
Far Ranger utilizes a specialized compound bow as a delivery system for an even more specialized arsenal of arrows. The arrows are kept in a back quiver. As each arrow is used, its spot is refilled through an unspecified technology accessing a storage facility, which effectively gives the Ranger an unlimited amount of ammunition. It is likely related to the same technology used by Gunfighter to keep his ammunition handy. The bow itself is likely accessed in the same manner, as he is often not seen with his bow, but holding it when it is needed.
The arrows themselves tend to vary. In addition to the standard "pointy stick that can poke holes in you" arrows, Far Ranger has used an arrow that emits a sonic pulse concentrated enough to stun targets and an arrow that includes a potent form of tear gas. It is likely that the arsenal includes other exotic arrows, but they have yet to be shown in use.
Far Ranger utilizes a "hover disk" for transportation, which allows him access to vertical movement at need. This disk is accessed in a similar manner as the arrows on his quiver.
Abilities
Unsurprisingly, Far Ranger is a crack shot in archery. He is also familiar with assorted forms of firearms, although he is not quite as skilled with such weapons as he is with a bow. Before SPD-31, Far Ranger had operated as a PRIMUS strike team leader, and has an operational knowledge of a great deal of PRIMUS weapons tech.
Character History
Thomas Riley was a career PRIMUS agent; feeling that ordinary men could stand up to the superhuman had been a part of his motivation in joining PRIMUS, but he was more interested in protecting the people who were endangered by super-villains. He worked his way through the hierarchy of field agents, but his career stalled hard when it was discovered that he was "allergic to the Cyberline solution", preventing him from becoming a Silver Avenger.
Despite this, he was well regarded by the men he served with, and was often called upon to lead strike teams against superhuman threats. On an increasing basis, he worked with a PRIMUS infiltrator named Emily Johnson; in a short period of time, attraction deepened into love and mutual respect-as the two would regularly be responsible for saving the other's life.
Then came Special Projects Directive #31-a directive that looked for volunteers from within PRIMUS who would operate outside the United States to protect US interests-and the volunteers did not need to be eligible for the Cyberline program. Feeling that this was a way to finally break out of his rut, Riley volunteered for the program, and was chosen as one of the twelve candidates for the program. The candidates were split into three groups; one for genetic remapping, one for cybernetic enhancments, and one for experimental tech use. Riley found himself in the later group, and demonstrated his archery skills-which were markedly better than his firearms skills.
The project came to a halt when word came down that SPD-31 had been rescinded; someone had overstepped their authority in letting things get this far. However, PRIMUS was reluctant to waste the efforts of the program, and came up with a simple solution: leave PRIMUS officially, and chose instead to be free agents-using their equipment and powers as superheroes. Riley was dubious about chucking his career out the window, but was assured that his severance would be more than adequate to compensate. Plus, after all, as a "super-hero", he could likely enhance his income by cashing in on the reputation he could build. To his credit, Riley planned only on enough to keep himself fed and housed.
This was assisted, however, by the fact that one of the other SPD-31 candidates had been Emily Johnson; as their new work would take them all over the world, the two decided that the simplest way of making sure that they didn't lose touch was to get married. Between the two of them, Riley figured that they should be able to handle any financial issues that came about.
Sadly, the one fly in the ointment was selecting his name for the ASPRA database. He tried "Green Arrow" and "Green Ranger", but was informed that trademark issues got in the way on both. Throwing up his hands, he said, "Okay, how about Far Ranger!? I mean, honestly, how many adjectives can be used up?!" To his surprise and horror, the database accepted that entry. Riley was philosophical about it; "Well, it could've been worse."
As Far Ranger, he is living up to his name, hunting down supervillains all over the world-and taking them down.
