Fhtagath
- A dungeon horrible, on all sides round,
- As one great furnace, flamed; yet from those flames
- No light, but rather darkness visible
- Serv'd only to discover sights of woe,
- Regions of sorrow, doleful shades, where peace
- And rest can never dwell, hope never comes
- That comes to all; but torture without end.
- —John Milton, Paradise Lost (1674)
Fhtagath is the first Nemesis designed for the character Runelord. I figured it was a good place to start for an up and coming rune-wizard; dangerous, but more worrisome by the fact that it is just a tool in the hands of another.
Personality
Fhtagath is a savage; in the place where demons dwell, it is a being of no great authority. It is only in places such as the Earthly realm that it is able to exert its will and release its rage-to the detriment of any who happen to be around it.
Powers
Fhtagath eschews more exotic methods of harm, preferring to get close and tear apart its enemies. Its strength allows it to shear through flesh and metal with the same level of effort.
Weaknesses and Limitations
Fhtagath is a slave to a master who remains unrevealed. The demon hates being a servant, but loves being free to wreak havoc in a world where it is strong, where it is respected and feared. The prospect of freedom-true freedom-can encourage it to make poor decisions.
Its authority on Earth is derived solely by the grace of its master. If the master chooses to bring it to heel, Fhtagath has no choice but to obey.
Minions
Fhtagath has been granted the use of lesser demons to serve its bidding by its master. Ice demons in appearance, they burn with an eternal flame that can be released against their foes.
Character History
Fhtagath's activity on Earth began in the recent past, as its master summoned it for the purpose of destroying the Master of Runes, a sorceress of substantial power. Fhtagath succeeded in doing so, but was unable to prevent her from banishing it from her Sanctum and passing her talismans and title to her student: Runelord. This somehow has interfered with Fhtagath's master's plan, and the demon was instructed to destroy the new Runelord at all costs.
Fhtagath made a number of attempts on Runelord's life, but each time it was stopped. The demon also attempted to spread its own brand of chaos and fear across the world, but by then, Runelord had begun hunting the demon as much as it had hunted him. Runelord, with the help of Champion Maiden and Galatea, finally confronted the demon in final conflict as it attempted to cast a large-scale death spell. The demon was ultimately defeated and banished from Earth.
