Fralex
If there's one thing that everyone in Star Trek Online seems to agree on, it's that they all hate the character of Neelix from Star Trek: Voyager. I always felt that was sort of unfair, but there you go. When the game opened up the Talaxian species as available to use as captains for lifetime subscribers, I knew that sooner or later, I'd make one. And I wanted to make a statement that even a Talaxian can be a badass. Fralex is my attempt to show that not all Talaxians are "nice".
Fralex
Gender: Male
Species: Talaxian
Affiliation: Klingon Empire
Personality
There is a perception that all Talaxians are happy, slightly-naive, humorous, and comfortable in life's little pleasures. This is reinforced by the importance of Neelix and his colony of Talaxians. What most people tend to forget is that the Talaxians also fought a war back in the 2340's-50's, and that wars are not happy, naive, or funny or comfortable. Fralex is not old enough to have fought in that war, but he is old enough to to remember his father, who had-and Fralex grew up to be very similar in temperment. This has made Fralex a very different Talaxian than the perceived norm: he's not naive, he's not humorous, and he's willing to spend his life in a Spartan-like existence. Yet, living this way does make him happy, in its own way.
He hasn't lost all of the traits that mark his people, however. He feels like a father figure to the younger Klingons under his command, admiring their passion for life, but instilling in them the discipline that he feels has served him well in life. He's not above kicking the snot out of upstarts, though-he has recognized that being immersed in a Klingon culture means he has to prove himself to them, every day. He's come to see that the way to their hearts is through the teachings of Kahless, and reminds them that "nothing is more honorable than victory". Fralex continues to prove that, by this standard, he's one of the more honorable individuals in the Empire today.
Biography
Fralex came from a military family that had been fragmented after the Haakonian War. His parents raised him as if it were still wartime, and so instilled the iron discipline that he would later become known for. All the same, as the Talaxian military was effectively extinct, he wound up serving with mercenary bands across the Delta Quadrant. Over time, he became known for pulling success out of likely defeats, and his reputation began to grow. This all ended when a ship he was commanding strayed too close to an unstable wormhole that threw him into the Beta Quadrant-deep into Klingon space.
The Klingons were not happy about intrusions, particularly in the middle of a war with the Federation. Fralex saw something in the Klingons, though, that awakened something in him. Perhaps it was their ferocity, their willingness to commit everything to victory. Or perhaps it was their sense of honor. Or perhaps even the fact that the Klingons would snatch defeat from the jaws of victory due to their lack of a quality he had in abundance: discipline. He offered himself and his crew to assist the Klingons in their war. The Klingons were wary, but felt that Fralex had proven himself when his ship was destroyed in battle, and he himself the sole survivor-by accident, as he was trapped in a pocket of air on the ship that had formed around the captain's chair. The Klingons respected that he had intended to go down with his ship, and offered him a scout vessel to prove himself further.
He did, and never looked back. Fralex would, in time, be among the captains who returned to the Delta Quadrant via a pair of dyson spheres, and came to command a Kobali starship, the Concord. Now, he commands a ship that combines his iron discipline with the ferociousness of the Klingons. His legend begun anew.
