The Null Division was a story-based RP supergroup on the Virtue server in the MMORPG City of Heroes, by Paragon Studios. The Null Division follows the story of a group of alien mercenary/freebooters who have crashed in Galaxy City in the wake of the Shivan bombardment, and are effectively marooned on the planet Earth. Despite this, their code of ethics lines right up with their current situation, and they're dedicated to destroying the Shivans and returning to the stars-in that order.

History
They have been across dozens of star systems. Fought in just as many; some battles won, some lost, but always on the side of right. Mercenaries, but not indiscriminately so. They don't care who you were before you joined them; what matters is who you are once you have. Alien species from across the universe sees this group as unreliable, trustworthy, skilled, incompetent, experts and fools. And all agree that they are worth the money.
They are the Null Division.
They travel in their mobile base of operations, the ship Song of Discordant Unity. Its home base is located on a dead planetoid in deep space. Commanded by Exarch Llan Llenthoril, a former Tredexian Battle-Lord, the Division lends its members to any cause that is a) willing to pay, and b) morally justifiable. They do not work for the oppressors-they help the oppressed. They do not take sides in holy wars; they resist conversions. They do not brutalize their enemies-they defeat them with as much efficiency as possible. If one could imagine the A-Team IN SPACE, the Null Division would probably match up well. They are willing to engage in battle in land, sea, space, and air.
This is what the Null Division once was. Unluckily for them, they've had some problems in the recent past. After an assignment that struck against a faction in the Conglomerate of Worlds, the Division returned to their home base to see it utterly destroyed-devastated by exotic radiation and overrun with beings created from the debris. That radiation allowed them to track the origin of the attackers-a small "fleet" of asteroids moving at incredible speeds-and several were heading towards inhabited worlds. Wanting justice, after losing their home, and also hoping to stop similar disasters on other worlds, the Division went in pursuit, fighting off the strange creatures and destroying the asteroids as best they could.
However, while they won most of their battles, the greatest lay ahead. The ship computers identified the next target world as "Earth", a world of interest to the Conglomerate of Worlds, and the end-point of the Kheldian Migration. The Division had the chance to destroy the asteroid before it impacted Earth and made more of a mess. Unfortunately, the exotic energies radiated by the object finally took its toll on the Song of Discordant Unity. Equipment became "infected" and animated. The weapons in the armory proved devastating as they congealed into a single entity, and the ship was damaged in the two places it could least afford: the power core and the engines. The battle on board the ship was devastating; the Exarch was killed in action, and the ship began its unstoppable descent down toward Earth. Most of the Division ejected in lifepods, while a small group stayed on board to try to land the ship clear of any indigenous species.
The ship crash landed in Galaxy City, just behind the falling meteors. The Shivans had come to Paragon City-but the Null Division (what is left of them) has come to fight them. And win.
Hierarchy
The Null Division follows a Tredexian command structure.
- Exarch: This is the overall commander of the Null Division. Post-Crash, this position is vacant.
- Autarch: This is the ranking of the XO/Second in command/etc.
- Command Staff: Each member of the Command Staff is either an Autarch or a Sectarch, and are responsible for various activities on the Unity or in ground combat situations.
- Sectarch: This is the lowest of the "officer" rankings, and tend to be the squad leaders or equivalents
- Specialist: One of the enlisted positions, they tend to be "the best there is at what they do".
- Warden: In all units, there must also be sergeants-the enlisted personnel who direct the rank and file in the middle of chaos.
- Aspirant: The rooks, the noobs, the new recruits; young enough to believe in the Division's ideals, but not yet old enough to have become jaded.
The Song of Discordant Unity
The Song of Discordant Unity is a Tredexian design military transport vessel. The ship, prior to the Crash, had been in continuous service for approximately seven years (converted to Earth's standard time measurements). It possessed light armament, mostly consisting of energy pulse projectors and a limited torpedo rack. Interior space was significant, containing military style transport equipment suited for land, sea, or air; a crew complement of nearly ten thousand sentients of assorted species; and an armory that could-and did-supply an army.
The ship was claimed by Exarch Llan Llenthoril when he broke away from a corrupt Tredexian military. For a brief period early in the service of the Null Division, the ship served as a home base for the Division; it was not until the liberation of the asteroid base Touchstone that the ship was primarily seen as a mode of transport.
In the year 2009 (Earth Reckoning), the ship began a two year mission to avenge the deaths at Touchstone after the Shivans destroyed it. This pursuit ended at the planet Earth, in a catastrophic manner. In spite of the devastation done to the ship by the impact, the salvage efforts allowed the Division survivors to continue to use the ship as their base of operations. However, it is an acknowledged fact that the Song of Discordant Unity will never take off to the stars again.
