The U.S.S. Frontiersman is an Odyssey Tactical Cruiser, one of the sister ships to the U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701-F); it is presently under the command of Captain Walter Frost.

History

The U.S.S. Frontiersman (NCC-168177) was officially commissioned on stardate 88207.46, not long after the commissioning of the U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701-F), along with a large number of Odyssey Class cruisers. While Enterprise and the original Odyssey (NX-97000) prototypes were designed to perform a generalist role, the other ships constructed were designed to fill specific roles. The Frontiersman was designed to defend itself in hostile areas of space, as the Admiralty had determined that this ship would potentially be operating far outside of Starfleet's supply bases. It is also probable that they also considered a need for a ship with significant firepower to serve as a backbone in the Klingon/Federation War.

Frontiersman was assigned to Captain Walter Frost, in his capacity as a Fleet Commander for the Corps of Discovery. Frost was able to handpick most of his command crew, many of which had come from his previous command on the U.S.S. Pioneer. He didn't get everyone he wanted, however; he lost his first officer, Venkoreth th'Reklaw, to promotion to Captain, and his CMO Doctor Samar, who th'Reklaw took as his new first officer with Frost's blessing.

Since its christening, the Frontiersman has been at the forefront of a number of Starfleet actions, most notably with events surrounding the official recognition of the Romulan Republic, and the recent opening of the Delta Quadrant via a pair of dyson spheres linked by Iconian gateways. It is anticipated that the Frontiersman will be eventually assigned to explore more of the Delta Quadrant-after all, given the number of species angered by the journey of the U.S.S. Voyager, this would appear to be the sort of mission that the Frontiersman was designed to handle.

Features

Odyssey-class Features

The Odyssey-class of cruiser was designed with modularity in mind. As such, one Odyssey cruiser is often unlike all of the others. The Frontiersman is no exception to that rule.

Frontiersman is capable of "chevron separation", similar to the saucer separation demonstrated by other cruiser classes. As with the Galaxy-class ships, the command crew take command of the engine section while a secondary command crew (usually the Beta shift) takes command of the saucer section. This is accomplished far more easily than in the Galaxy-class ships, due to the proximity of a bridge transporter, which allows for swift intraship transports.

Frontiersman is also equipped with an auxiliary craft-an Aquarius-class light escort. This additional ship is attached to the stern of the Frontiersman and is undocked when the additional firepower is necessary, or in other circumstances where standard shuttles would be inappropriate. The escort, U.S.S. Crockett, is constantly kept powered up on standby status, which is a significant drain on the Frontiersman's resources. These resources are freed up when the Crockett is active, and accounts for improved performance from the main ship in such situations.

The Frontiersman has a number of Class-10 shuttlecraft that are stored in the ventral shuttlebay, as well as a number of "work bee" utility craft to assist in exterior repair work. It is also outfitted with a Captain's Yacht (the U.S.S. Paragon), suitable for longer-range and longer-term assignments beyond a regular shuttle's capability.

Defense Systems

Frontiersman has an advanced array of phasers fore and aft. Additionally, the ship has fore and aft advanced quantum torpedo launchers. Both styles of weapon were recently supplied by the Lewis and Clarke starbase, which has become the "home base" for many of the ships assigned to the Corps of Discovery.

Frontiersman also boasts a sophisticated covariant shield suite derived from Solonae Dyson Sphere technology.

Engineering Systems

The Frontiersman has a standard hyper-injection warp core, although Commander Jacobson has done extensive modifications to the core.

The engines of the ship have been modified heavily with Borg tech, with the assistance of "Madelyne of Borg". This allows the Frontiersman to travel at transwarp velocities as a matter of course. Additionally, the ship is equipped with advanced quantum slipstream drives, allowing vast areas of space to be traversed in a fraction of the time it would take at top warp velocities. The ship is also equipped with technology allowing it to access Starfleet's transwarp conduit network; Commander Jacobson along with Commander Haynes have made substantial upgrades allowing a more rapid recharge of the systems permitting conduit access.

Species
Human
Biography
A fellow student with Captain Frost in the Academy, she specialized in temporal theory. After graduation, she spent a year "trapped" at Spacedock doing particle analysis before being asked to serve as Science Officer by Frost. While she had no command ambitions, Frost recognized the potential within her, and when his longtime XO was promoted to Captain, she stepped into the role.

LCDR Ch'Tang

USS Frontiersman
Position
Tactical officer
Species
Khurtan
Biography
Ch'Tang is a Khurtan, a species from a world larger than Earth, with a slower rotation, and further from its sun-which may explain the dark coloration of his leathery flesh. Tall, strong, and deliberate, Ch'Tang is the Chief Security Officer on the ship, specializing in unarmed combat-which, thanks to his superior strength, makes him the idea solution to situations which don't call for a phaser.

CDR Lee Jacobson

Position
Chief Engineer

Biography
Lee Jacobson is the drive of the ship, in more ways than one. She was involved with the construction and design of the Excalibur-class starship during her Academy days, and spent her initial post-graduate days at Utopia Planitia working upon advanced spaceframe design. She was tapped to serve as Chief Engineer by Captain Frost in 2409, and has served with distinction ever since. She is known for keeping ships running long after they've taken enough damage to cripple any other ships. She tends to hate on-the-fly solutions, but can produce them as needed.

Dr. Malea

Position
Chief Medical Officer
Species
Orion
Biography
Malea is a defector from the Orion Syndicate, primarily because they threw in with the Klingon Empire. As a medical practitioner, she began to offer her services to people affected by the war. After being saved in a tense situation by Captain Frost's crew, she realized that she couldn't stay on the sidelines anymore, and offered to serve as a doctor for the ship. She took over the Chief Medical Officer spot from the former CMO after he transferred to another ship.
