I had learned that secrets were as great a strength as any physical muscle. Knowing a secret gave one power. To conceal or to reveal it was to exercise it.
"Alcaran", Tales of an Imperial Agent (2011)

Alcaran Rost was my RP-based character for Star Wars: The Old Republic. An Imperial Agent, he was meant to demonstrate that the Sith Empire wasn't necessarily all Dark-Siders.

Personality

Alcaran was extremely loyal to the Empire as an entity. He believed in Order, and Law. He believed that the enemies of the Empire should be destroyed. However, he had a significant animosity towards the Sith; in the beginning, he respected their power, understanding that they could crush him like a bug. This began to change when he defeated Darth Jadus, and was brainwashed as a result to prevent him from doing similar to other members of the Dark Council. His involvement with Raina Temple also probably had much to do with his growing estrangement with the Sith. The last straw was when the Dark Council dissolved Imperial Intelligence, at the secret urging of the Star Cabal. Alcaran defied the Sith in secret, and kept the Black Codex for himself.

Despite all of this, he was still capable of working with the Sith if it helped keep the Empire strong; and some Sith proved themselves reasonably reliable and rational instead of being monsters. Alcaran keeps an open mind, even if he defaults to thinking of the Sith as his enemy.

Abilities

Alcaran was perhaps the top Imperial Agent in the Sith Empire. Trained as an Operative, he was lethal up close, using stealth field generators to remain hidden and strike viciously with a vibroblade. He was a reasonably good marksman, and a fair pilot. More importantly, however, he was capable of deception on a grand scale. He was well versed in disguise, seduction, assassination, and infiltration.

Weaknesses and Limitations

As a normal man in the Sith Empire, Alcaran was not exactly thrilled about some of the monstrous actions the Sith took. In short, Alcaran is not a fan of collateral damage, and is not a man who prefers to use a hammer when a scalpel will do. This puts him at odds with some of the most powerful people in the galaxy.

He can also be vulnerable to threats to his friends, his crew-who he has come to view as his extended family, for the most part. (SCORPIO being a noted exception.)

Equipment

Alcaran had most of the standard equipment offered to an Imperial agent. He made use of blaster rifles and vibroblades in his career, as well as sabotage charges and thermal detonators. His most effective tool was a stealth field generator, which allowed him to remain concealed from sight and other forms of detection.

He was also known to use an X-70B Phantom as a personal starship. The exact registry was removed, making it untraceable.

Character History

Early Life

The man who would later be known as Alcaran Rost was born on the colony world of V’darus, in the Sith Empire. When V'darus's settlements were destroyed by the local fauna, the boy was taken in by smugglers; when they were caught by a Sith Lord, he saw something in the boy that had potential for something better. So instead of sharing the fate of the smugglers, the Sith Lord known as Darth Null gave him a chance to be something more. When he asked the boy his name, the boy hesitated, wishing to abandon his past. Darth Null encouraged him to "choose what you will become"; the boy chose the name Alcaran Rost.

Alcaran was remanded into a school for spies-a training ground for people who would become members of Imperial Intelligence. The best would be sent to the capital world of Dromund Kaas. It was probably best not to think too much as to what happened to those who were not the best. Alcaran determined that he would be one of the best.

In time, he was.

Cipher Nine

He was eventually sent on a number of assignments in the Hutt sphere of influence. An assassination on Nar Shadda led to him being taken under the direct command of Keeper. Keeper sent him to Nal Hutta to test him-and to encourage the Hutts there to work for the Empire, no matter what it took, as long as they couldn't point to the Empire's direct influence. Success in this mission-and in a series of missions in Kaas City-led Keeper to assign him a codename: Cipher Nine.

The activities of Cipher Nine are mostly unknown, thanks to the use of the Black Codex. It is known that he would eventually marry-the presumption is that he wed Raina Temple, but there isn't any proof-and have children. In time, after he deemed that he had given enough of his life to the Empire, and possibly influenced by the fact that his wife was a secret Force-sensitive, he would vanish from sight-along with the Black Codex.

Legacy

In time, he would take the alias of "Walker", and his wife would become known as "Jaelyn Land". He created a secret redoubt outside of Kaas City to store the Codex, and set the brain of the droid SCORPIO to watch over it, with orders to only allow himself or his heirs access. It would not be for thousands of years later until this event took place, when his descendant Coreth Landwalker came upon the Codex, and eventually erased portions of it, and ended SCORPIO.[1]

A number of mixed records indicate that he may or may not have been known as "the Outlander" in the Zakuul Empire; there have been no less than eight possible individuals who may have filled that role in history.

As an interesting note, Alcaran was listed as being spelled as "Alcarin" in early texts; later texts have shown a more accurate spelling.

Affiliations

Organizations
  • The Correctors: For a time, Alcaran worked with a faction within the Empire known as the Correctors, led by Darth Callous. He would depart the organization at the orders of Keeper.
  • Imperial Intelligence: As Cipher Nine, Alcaran was one of the most feared and respected agents of the Empire. When the organization dissolved, he maintained his relationships with the former Minister of Intelligence and Keeper as best he could. Tellingly, he did not officially join Sith Intelligence when it was created, but was willing to work with them.
Friends
  • Raina Temple: Alcaran was very much involved with Raina Temple; rumor has it that he married her in secret, although no records exist of such an action.
Opponents
  • The Sith: Alcaran has a significant antipathy towards the monsters known as the Sith. He finds them useful, but not at the expense of the people of the Empire.

Trivia

Alcaran's backstory is the story of the Imperial Agent in the Star Wars: The Old Republic game, with the details that he tended to be slightly light-side aligned; he was appropriately ruthless in dealing with enemies to the Empire, which tended to balance his desire to keep the civilians intact. Originally conceived on an RP server for an RP guild, things never really took off, but there was enough written about the character to create the information on this page.

Alcaran did not turn over the Black Codex to the Sith Empire nor the Republic, but chose to operate for the Empire on his own. When Darth Marr chose to create Sith Intelligence under Lana Beniko, Alcaran chose to operate independently of Sith Intelligence, but was willing to work with them to protect the Empire.

Fiction

  1. This account does seem to contradict revelations in Rost's era where SCORPIO was revealed to have an origin tied to the work of the species that inhabited the world of Iokath, and eventually merged with the planetary network there. There is speculation that the SCORPIO that was put into this redoubt was a quietly created copy of SCORPIO-such an act would be within Rost's capabilities.
